Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the association between cesarean delivery and the risk of complications in subsequent pregnancies.
  • To determine if the observed risks are influenced by prior pregnancy complications.

Main Methods:

  • Historical cohort study utilizing the Medical Birth Registry of Norway (1967-2003).
  • Analysis included women with two or more singleton births and women with three or more singleton births.
  • Outcomes in second and third pregnancies were compared based on delivery mode in the first pregnancy.

Main Results:

  • Cesarean delivery at first birth was linked to higher risks of preeclampsia, small for gestational age, placenta previa, placenta accreta, placental abruption, and uterine rupture in the second pregnancy.
