Psychodynamic Therapy01:29

Psychodynamic Therapy

Psychodynamic therapies emphasize the exploration of unconscious processes and early childhood experiences as fundamental contributors to psychological difficulties. These therapies, deeply rooted in Freud's psychoanalytic theory, aim to uncover and resolve unconscious conflicts, granting individuals insights that promote emotional and behavioral healing. Contemporary psychodynamic approaches have evolved, integrating a broader range of influences and methodologies while still valuing the...
Subconsciousness and No Awareness01:15

Subconsciousness and No Awareness

The concept of subconscious awareness refers to the processing of information below the level of conscious thought, which significantly influences both behaviors and decisions. It is also known as waking subconscious awareness. This complex level of cognition operates without the direct awareness of the individual, facilitating rapid and simultaneous handling of multiple information streams.
An illustrative example of subconscious processing is its role in problem-solving. Often, individuals...
Subliminal Perception01:15

Subliminal Perception

Subliminal perception refers to the processing of sensory information that occurs below the level of conscious awareness. Researchers study subliminal perception by presenting a stimulus, such as a word or image, very quickly, typically around 50 milliseconds. This rapid presentation is often followed by another stimulus, such as a pattern of dots or lines, which blocks further mental processing of the initial stimulus. As a result, if participants cannot identify the initial stimulus better...

Psychotherapy aims to support individuals in...
Freudian Psychology01:26

Freudian Psychology

Sigmund Freud, an Austrian neurologist born in 1856, significantly influenced psychology through his exploration of the unconscious mind. His interest in patients suffering from hysteria and neurosis — conditions without apparent physical causes — led him to theorize the existence of an unconscious mind, a repository for feelings and urges beyond our awareness. Freud's innovative approach included techniques such as dream analysis, free association, and attention to slips of the tongue to...
Altered States of Awareness01:06

Altered States of Awareness

Altered states of consciousness represent significant deviations from one's normal mental state. These deviations can range from subtle changes in awareness to profound transformations in perception, thought processes, and sensory experiences. Altered states of consciousness can be triggered by various factors, including drug use, meditation, hypnosis, illness, or even intense fatigue.
The ingestion of substances like stimulants or hallucinogens leads to chemical alterations in the brain that...

Summary

Adolescents with unexplained physical symptoms improved rapidly with self-hypnosis and guided therapy. This approach, utilizing automatic word processing (AWP), helped uncover psychological causes and facilitated symptom resolution.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Psychology
  • Adolescent Medicine

Background:

  • Two adolescents presented with severe, incapacitating physical symptoms.
  • Standard medical evaluations failed to identify an organic cause for their conditions.

Observation:

  • Child psychiatry consultation suggested counseling for both patients.
  • Both adolescents experienced immediate symptom relief after learning self-hypnosis relaxation techniques, including favorite place imagery and progressive relaxation.

Findings:

  • Patients were introduced to automatic word processing (AWP) during hypnosis to explore underlying psychological issues.
  • Information gathered via AWP provided valuable insights that guided subsequent therapeutic interventions.
  • The combination of self-hypnosis and AWP contributed to rapid symptom improvement.
