Summary

Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy in Hong Kong showed improved peri-operative outcomes and acceptable early results for prostate cancer patients. Continence recovery was high, though oncological outcomes require further long-term evaluation.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery

Background:

  • Prostate cancer management often involves radical prostatectomy.
  • Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (LRP) offers a minimally invasive approach.
  • Experience with LRP in Hong Kong was previously limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To summarize the single-centre experience with LRP in Hong Kong over a 5-year period.
  • To evaluate the early outcomes and feasibility of LRP in a local setting.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of 87 patients undergoing LRP from March 2002 to May 2007.
  • Utilized the Montsouris technique and its modifications, including extraperitoneal descending approach.
  • Collected and analyzed peri-operative data and follow-up information.

Main Results:

  • Successful LRP in 85/87 patients (2 conversions to open surgery).
  • Improved peri-operative parameters: reduced operating time, blood loss, transfusion rates, and complications.
  • Achieved 93% clear surgical margins in organ-confined disease; 13% biochemical recurrence.
  • Continence recovery: 69% by 6 months, 92% by 12 months; estimated 20% erectile function preservation.

Conclusions:

  • LRP can be successfully implemented in Hong Kong with acceptable early results.
  • The procedure demonstrated favorable peri-operative and functional outcomes.
  • Further long-term follow-up is necessary to fully assess oncological control and functional recovery.
