Self-Presentation: Self-Monitoring and Self-Handicapping02:05

Self-Presentation: Self-Monitoring and Self-Handicapping

People can go to great lengths to protect their self-image and present themselves in ways that they want others to see them. Sociologist Erving Goffman presented the idea that a person is like an actor on a stage. Calling his theory dramaturgy, Goffman believed that we use “impression management” to present ourselves to others as we hope to be perceived. Each situation is a new scene, and individuals perform different roles depending on who is present (Goffman, 1959). Think about the way you...
Burn Injuries01:22

Burn Injuries

Burn injuries occur when the skin and underlying tissues are damaged due to exposure to heat, electricity, chemicals, radiation, or friction. They can vary in severity, from minor superficial burns to severe deep burns that can be life-threatening.
The damage results in the death of skin cells, which can lead to a massive loss of fluid. Dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and renal and circulatory failure follow, which can be fatal. Burn patients are treated with intravenous fluids to offset...
Self-Regulation01:25

Self-Regulation

Self-regulation, also known as self-control, encompasses a range of cognitive and behavioral processes that allow individuals to adjust their internal states and outward actions to align with socially acceptable norms and long-term goals. It plays a fundamental role in adaptive functioning, from resisting impulsive behaviors to persisting through challenging tasks. While its benefits are widely recognized, self-regulation is not limitless. Muraven and Baumeister's theory posits that...
Psychosurgery01:30

Psychosurgery

Psychosurgery, the surgical alteration or permanent removal of brain tissue to alleviate severe psychological conditions, stands as one of the most radical and controversial treatments in the history of mental health care. Its development and application have evolved significantly, marked by dramatic shifts in scientific understanding and ethical perspectives.
Historical Development of Psychosurgery
In the 1930s, Portuguese neurologist Antonio Egas Moniz introduced a surgical procedure designed...
Blinding01:11

Blinding

Blinding is a commonly used method of not telling participants which treatment a subject is receiving. Blinding is a critical part of a randomized control trial or RCT. It reduces the bias that affects the results. In an RCT, blinding is used in the form of a placebo. A placebo effect occurs when untreated subjects falsely believe they have received the treatment and report improved symptoms. A placebo or a dummy treatment is administered to subjects to negate the bias caused by such an effect.

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Individuals who self-harm by burning often exhibit psychotic symptoms and are more likely to be psychiatric inpatients. Enhanced collaboration between psychiatry and burns units is crucial for patient care.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Burn Medicine
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Deliberate self-harm (DSH) is a significant public health concern requiring specialized care.
  • Burns resulting from DSH present unique challenges for both psychiatric and medical teams.
  • Understanding the specific characteristics of individuals who self-harm by burning is essential for targeted interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the clinical characteristics of individuals who self-harm by burning with those who self-harm by other means.
  • To identify factors associated with self-harm by burning.
  • To inform the development of improved care pathways for this patient group.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective comparison of 37 patients referred for DSH by burning to a liaison psychiatry service.
  • A control group of patients referred for DSH by other means was included.
  • Data collected included psychiatric symptoms, medication, and inpatient status at the time of self-harm.

Main Results:

  • Patients who self-harmed by burning were significantly more likely to present with psychotic symptoms.
  • A higher proportion of the burning DSH group were psychiatric inpatients at the time of the incident.
  • Prescription of psychotropic medication was more common in the DSH by burning group.

Conclusions:

  • Self-harm by burning is associated with more severe psychiatric conditions, including psychosis.
  • Enhanced communication and joint working between psychiatry and burns units are vital for optimal patient management.
  • This study highlights the need for tailored support and treatment strategies for individuals engaging in DSH by burning.
