Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between numeracy skills and Body Mass Index (BMI) in adult primary care patients.

  • A cross-sectional study was conducted with adult, English-speaking primary care patients.
  • Body Mass Index (BMI) was self-reported, and numeracy and literacy skills were assessed using standardized tests (WRAT-3 and REALM).
  • Statistical analyses, including Spearman's rank correlation and linear regression, were used to examine the association between numeracy and BMI.

Main Results:

  • The study included 160 adult primary care patients with a mean BMI of 30.5 kg/m².
  • A significant association was found between lower numeracy skills (less than 9th grade) and higher mean BMI (31.8 vs. 27.9 kg/m²).

Conclusions:

  • Low numeracy skills are significantly associated with higher BMI in adult primary care patients.
  • While causality cannot be established, numeracy may play a critical role in the effectiveness of weight management interventions.
  • Further research is warranted to explore the clinical implications and magnitude of numeracy's effect on weight management.
