Mandibular shifting to obtain oral visibility

This is a technique that is used in the maxillary second and third molar region when attempting to gain better access in these areas. Having the patient open his or her mouth slightly and shift in the direction in which treatment is being preformed allows the practitioner greater access to the buccal surface of these molars. This technique can truly double the amount of access and visibility and enable the practitioner to perform treatment with greater ease, including when attempting an extraction, tooth preparation and, especially, when taking an impression.
