Summary

Bilateral elastofibroma, a rare soft tissue mass, can mimic malignant tumors. Needle aspiration biopsy and positron emission tomography/computed tomography are effective diagnostic tools for this benign condition.

Area of Science:

  • Soft tissue pathology
  • Oncology
  • Diagnostic imaging

Background:

  • Elastofibroma is a rare, reactive soft tissue mass, typically benign but with a clinical appearance that can suggest malignancy.
  • It most commonly presents in the periscapular region, often as a unilateral lesion.

Observation:

  • This report details a case of a 70-year-old male presenting with bilateral elastofibroma.
  • The patient exhibited a rare manifestation of this typically unilateral soft tissue tumor.

Findings:

  • Diagnosis was confirmed using needle aspiration biopsy, a minimally invasive procedure.
  • Positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) provided crucial imaging data for accurate diagnosis.

Implications:

  • Needle aspiration biopsy and PET/CT are highly effective for diagnosing elastofibroma, even in rare bilateral presentations.
  • These methods aid in distinguishing benign elastofibroma from potentially malignant soft tissue tumors, guiding appropriate patient management.
