We compared three methods for estimating free-energy differences: flat histogram (FH), optimized ensemble (OE), and MinVar. MinVar showed better performance in hard sphere systems, while correlations limited accuracy in copolymer systems.
Area of Science:
- Computational chemistry and physics
- Statistical mechanics
Background:
- Accurate estimation of free-energy differences is crucial in molecular simulations.
- Expanded ensembles are widely used but can suffer from precision limitations.
- Biasing weight manipulation is a key strategy for improving expanded ensemble simulations.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate and compare three biasing weight strategies for enhanced free-energy calculations.
- To investigate the impact of sampling correlations and macrostate staging on accuracy.
- To introduce and assess a novel MinVar method for minimizing expected variance.
Main Methods:
- Comparison of flat histogram (FH), optimized ensemble (OE), and MinVar methods.
- Application to symmetric diblock copolymer and hard sphere systems.
- Analysis of sampling correlations and acceptance ratio methods.
Main Results:
- In diblock copolymer systems, sampling correlations limited the attainable accuracy, potentially reducing effectiveness of variance-minimizing methods.
- Optimized ensemble (OE) method's data decorrelation benefit is realized only when correlations are the primary error source.
- MinVar method outperformed OE and FH in the hard sphere system, demonstrating that maximizing round trips is not always optimal for precision.
Conclusions:
- The choice of biasing weight strategy significantly impacts free-energy estimation accuracy and precision.
- System-specific properties, like sampling correlations, dictate the optimal method.
- The MinVar method offers a promising alternative, particularly in systems where round trips are not easily achieved.
