Summary

This study evaluated a multiagency mock drill for school emergency preparedness. While local and federal agencies performed well, the drill highlighted the need for improved communication and coordination between school staff and external responders.

Background:

School districts are mandated to create emergency management plans.
Few school safety plans undergo systematic effectiveness evaluations.
This study addresses the need for evaluating crisis response plans.

Purpose of the Study:

To propose and evaluate a model for planning, executing, and assessing a multiagency mock drill.
To examine the crisis response capabilities of school administrators.

Main Methods:

A school-based mock drill involving over 500 participants from various agencies.
Evaluation of the response of 26 district and school administrators.

Main Results:

Local and federal agencies effectively secured students and staff.
Discrepancies were identified between documented procedures and actual drill practices.

Conclusions:

The mock drill demonstrated the value of systematic evaluation.
Enhanced communication and coordination between school personnel and external agencies are crucial for future crisis events.
