Background:

Vaginal ring is a contraceptive method.
Understanding adolescent experiences is crucial for effective healthcare.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore racial/ethnic minority adolescent females' experiences with the vaginal ring.
To identify key stages in the adoption of vaginal ring use.

Main Methods:

In-depth interviews were conducted.
A sample of 32 young women aged 15-24 years who had used the vaginal ring participated.
Grounded theory was used for qualitative analysis.

Main Results:

Adolescents progress through distinct stages: awareness, initial reactions, insertion/removal experiences, and first sexual experiences.
A critical assessment and adjustment stage determines continued use.
Peer-to-peer sharing of experiences is a final stage.

Conclusions:

A model of vaginal ring adoption was developed.
This model can guide healthcare providers in counseling adolescents.
Specific recommendations for advising young users are provided.
