Summary

Percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) significantly improves lung function, specifically forced vital capacity (FVC%), in patients with osteoporosis. This positive impact on respiratory function, however, develops over time following the procedure.

Background:

  • Osteoporosis-related vertebral compression fractures can impair respiratory function.
  • Percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) is a procedure to treat these fractures, potentially improving lung capacity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To retrospectively evaluate changes in respiratory function following percutaneous vertebroplasty.
  • To assess the impact of PVP on lung function parameters in patients with vertebral compression fractures.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 41 patients who underwent PVP for osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures.
  • Respiratory function tests, including percent forced vital capacity (FVC%) and percent forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1%), were performed pre- and post-PVP.
  • Statistical comparison using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test.

Main Results:

  • A significant improvement in FVC% was observed post-PVP (85.2% to 91.5%, P<0.003).
  • No significant change was noted in FEV1%.
  • Of 16 patients with low preoperative FVC%, six (38%) showed improvement into the normal range postoperatively.

Conclusions:

  • Percutaneous vertebroplasty can enhance preoperative lung function deficits.
  • The improvement in lung function after PVP is evident but requires a period of time to manifest fully.
