Summary

The automatic full-field perfusion image analyzer (AFFPIA) method shows high reliability and reproducibility for analyzing retinal capillary flow, outperforming the default retinal flowmeter (HRF) software. This advancement offers superior quantitative analysis of retinal microcirculation.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Scanning laser Doppler flowmetry (SLDF) topography is crucial for assessing retinal microcirculation.
  • Accurate and reproducible analysis of retinal capillary flow, volume, and velocity is essential for diagnosing and monitoring eye diseases.
  • Existing analysis methods may have limitations in reliability and reproducibility.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate and compare the reliability and reproducibility of different analysis methods for retinal capillary parameters derived from SLDF topography.
  • To determine if the automatic full-field perfusion image analyzer (AFFPIA) offers superior performance compared to the default retinal flowmeter (HRF) software.

Main Methods:

  • SLDF topography data was analyzed using two methods: the default retinal flowmeter (HRF) software and the automatic full-field perfusion image analyzer (AFFPIA).

  • Reliability and reproducibility were quantified using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC).
  • Main Results:

    • The AFFPIA full-field method demonstrated excellent reliability for capillary flow, achieving an ICC of 0.99.
    • High reproducibility was observed with the AFFPIA full-field method, with an ICC of 0.74 for capillary flow.

    Conclusions:

    • The AFFPIA full-field method is highly reliable and reproducible for analyzing retinal capillary flow using SLDF topography.
    • The AFFPIA method is superior to the default HRF software for quantitative analysis of retinal microcirculation.
