Obedience01:08

Obedience

According to obedience research, we may harm others under the forceful pressures of an authority figure (Milgram, 1974). How about if the inappropriate orders were delivered with less force? The increasing interdependence between nurses and physicians compelled Hofling and his colleagues to explore nurses’ reactions to a potentially harmful medical request made by the perceived authority figure, the doctor (Hofling, Brotzman, Dalrymple, Graves, & Pierce, 1966). In this situation, obedience...
Masking and Demasking Agents01:19

Masking and Demasking Agents

EDTA titrations may necessitate masking and demasking agents to temporarily protect a particular metal ion in a mixture from the EDTA reaction. These agents facilitate the sequential analysis of the metal ions by forming stable complexes with some—but not all—metal ions during certain steps.
There are many masking agents, such as cyanide, fluoride, triethanolamine, thiourea, and 2,3-bis(sulfanyl)propan-1-ol (formerly 2,3-dimercapto-1-propanol), with the masking agent chosen based on the metal...
Censoring Survival Data01:09

Censoring Survival Data

Survival analysis is a statistical method used to analyze time-to-event data, often employed in fields such as medicine, engineering, and social sciences. One of the key challenges in survival analysis is dealing with incomplete data, a phenomenon known as "censoring." Censoring occurs when the event of interest (such as death, relapse, or system failure) has not occurred for some individuals by the end of the study period or is otherwise unobservable, and it might have many different reasons...
Ethics in Research01:56

Ethics in Research

Today, scientists agree that good research is ethical in nature and is guided by a basic respect for human dignity and safety. However, this has not always been the case. Modern researchers must demonstrate that the research they perform is ethically sound.

Impression Management Techniques III: Aligning Actions

Aligning actions are communicative strategies individuals employ to maintain social harmony and preserve personal identity in the face of potential disruptions to social norms. These actions are particularly important in managing social impressions when one's behavior might be seen as inappropriate, incompetent, or morally questionable.Types of Aligning ActionsThe three principal types of aligning actions are disclaimers, accounts, and apologies.DisclaimersDisclaimers are preventive; they are...
Interference and Diffraction02:18

Interference and Diffraction

Interference is a characteristic phenomenon exhibited by waves. When two electromagnetic waves interact with their peaks and troughs coinciding, a resulting wave with enhanced amplitude is produced. This is known as constructive interference. In this case, the two waves interacting are in phase with each other.

Summary

This study examines how social disclosure and sexual orientation categories are constructed. It questions how therapeutic care could change by viewing sexual orientation as an unstable truth, suggesting new practice approaches.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Sociology
  • Gender Studies

Background:

  • Disclosure is a core social practice influencing mental health and psychotherapy.
  • Current therapeutic models often assume disclosure reveals stable truths about individuals.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To interrogate the historical construction of sexuality categories and disclosure.
  • To explore how therapeutic care might evolve if sexual orientation is viewed as an unstable truth.
  • To propose practice approaches that challenge the emphasis on disclosure.

Main Methods:

  • Historical and critical analysis of sexuality categories.
  • Theoretical examination of disclosure in psychotherapeutic contexts.
  • Exploration of alternative therapeutic frameworks.

Main Results:

  • Categories of sexuality and disclosure are historically contingent and socially constructed.
  • Rethinking sexual orientation as an unstable truth challenges established therapeutic norms.
  • Valorization of disclosure may limit therapeutic possibilities.

Conclusions:

  • Therapeutic practices can be reimagined by deconstructing assumptions about stable identities.
  • Moving beyond the mandatory disclosure paradigm can foster more inclusive and nuanced care.
  • Embracing the instability of truth can lead to more flexible and responsive therapeutic interventions.
