Background:

  • The Sunny Days, Healthy Ways (SDHW) sun safety curriculum was adapted into interactive multimedia programs.
  • Evaluation of these programs targeted children aged 5-13.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the effectiveness of interactive multimedia sun safety programs.
  • To compare computer-based instruction, teacher-led instruction, and a combined approach.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized, pretest-posttest, 3-group study design was employed.
  • 871 students from 12 primary schools in the western US participated.
  • Interventions included computer programs alone, teacher-led presentations, or a combination.

Main Results:

  • The combined approach significantly improved sun safety knowledge compared to individual methods (P = .001).
  • Self-reported sun protection improved in lower grades with the combined method versus teacher-led alone (P = .005).
  • Higher grades did not show a significant improvement in self-reported protection with the combined method.

Conclusions:

  • Integrating computer-based sun safety education with teacher instruction in primary schools enhances sun safety.
  • This combined approach shows particular benefit for improving sun protection behaviors in younger children.
