  • Evaluating staff perceptions of different casting materials is essential for optimizing clinical practice and patient outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess healthcare staff opinions on the application characteristics of seven commercially available casting materials.
  • To identify preferred casting materials based on ease of use, molding, and setting properties.

Main Methods:

  • A blinded evaluation of seven casting materials (plaster of Paris and synthetic) was conducted over six weeks.
  • Staff completed detailed forms assessing unrolling, peg centering, adherence, stringiness, molding, and setting.
  • Staff indicated their willingness to use each material daily.

Main Results:

  • 638 evaluation forms were completed, with 183 for POP and 455 for synthetic casts.
  • Significant differences in application were found between POP and synthetic casts, and within categories.
  • 78% of staff preferred daily use of POP casts versus 44% for synthetic casts. Gypsona (90%) and Scotchcast (98%) received high daily use preference.

Conclusions:

  • Staff can reach a consensus on preferred casting materials based on application characteristics.
  • Material selection should consider application properties alongside cost and strength.
  • Gypsona and Scotchcast emerged as the highest-scoring casting materials in this evaluation.
