Background:

  • Increasing popularity of raw fish consumption (sushi, sashimi, cebiche) globally and in Chile.
  • Anisakidosis is an emerging foodborne parasitic zoonosis caused by the ingestion of third-stage larvae of Anisakis simplex or Pseudoterranova decipiens.
  • Larvae are acquired through consumption of raw or undercooked fish and seafood.

Observation:

  • A case of accidental ingestion of Pseudoterranova decipiens is reported in Chile.
  • Pseudoterranova decipiens is the most common anisakid species in Chile.
  • Larvae can cause acute gastritis, intestinal symptoms, or allergic reactions like urticaria, angioedema, and anaphylactic shock.

Findings:

  • In Chile, Pseudoterranova decipiens infections are generally non-invasive, rarely migrating beyond the stomach.
  • Symptoms are typically mild or absent, but can include gastritis.
  • Most larvae are spontaneously eliminated; some require endoscopic removal.

Implications:

  • Public health awareness regarding the risks of consuming raw or undercooked seafood is crucial.
  • Prevention strategies include thorough cooking or freezing of fish to inactivate larvae.
  • Early diagnosis and management are important for symptomatic cases.
