Summary

A rare long-term complication of percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is ureteral stricture, which can occur years after the procedure for kidney stones. This case highlights the importance of long-term monitoring after PCNL.

Background:

Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is a standard procedure for managing large renal stones.
While generally safe, potential complications require ongoing investigation.

Observation:

A 30-year-old woman developed significant ureteral stricture and pyelocalyceal dilation years after PCNL for a pelvic stone.
The patient was initially asymptomatic following the procedure, which included an inadvertent pelvic perforation.

Findings:

This case presents a previously unreported late complication of PCNL: extensive proximal ureteral stricture.
The findings suggest a potential link between pelvic perforation during PCNL and subsequent ureteral complications.

Implications:

Ureteral stricture is a rare but serious late complication of PCNL that necessitates further research into its etiology.
Understanding and preventing such complications are crucial for improving long-term patient outcomes after kidney stone surgery.
