Pertussis (whooping cough) can occur in unvaccinated children. An epidemiological study of a pertussis case in a child with pneumonia highlighted the importance of vaccination status and family contact tracing for early detection and prevention.

Findings:
- Among family contacts, 35% tested positive for pertussis via PCR.
- Of those positive by PCR, 20% also had positive cultures.
- Incomplete DPT vaccination was noted in the index case.
Implications:
- Pneumonia in children under five warrants assessment of DPT vaccination status.
- Family-based epidemiological studies are crucial for identifying and controlling pertussis outbreaks.
- Early detection and intervention are key to preventing pertussis transmission.
