Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between patch test reactions to nickel, cobalt, and chromium and ambient temperature and humidity.
  • To determine if weather conditions affect the accuracy of diagnosing metal-induced allergic contact dermatitis.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of 61,435 patient patch test results from Austrian and German dermatology departments (1993-2001).
  • Evaluation of test reactions alongside local weather data (temperature, humidity) at the time of testing.
  • Application of multinomial logistic regression models to examine associations.

Main Results:

  • Increased odds of irritant and doubtful reactions to all three metals under cold/arid conditions.
  • Elevated odds of weak allergic reactions to nickel and cobalt in cold/dry weather.
