Summary

Visual prognosis after branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO) depends on initial visual acuity. Most patients with good presenting vision maintained it, while those with poor vision saw little improvement.

Background:

  • Branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO) is a common cause of sudden, painless vision loss.
  • Understanding the visual prognosis is crucial for patient management and counseling.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the visual prognosis in eyes diagnosed with branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO).
  • To determine factors influencing visual outcomes after BRAO.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective, observational case series of 52 patients with BRAO.
  • Inclusion criteria: decreased central macular perfusion on fluorescein angiography (FA).
  • Exclusion criteria: other optic nerve or anterior segment diseases, central retinal artery occlusion, cilioretinal artery occlusion.

Main Results:

  • 54% of eyes presented with best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of 20/40 or better.
  • At a mean 14-month follow-up, 60% of eyes achieved BCVA of 20/40 or better.
  • 89% of eyes with baseline BCVA ≥ 20/40 maintained this level; only 14% with BCVA ≤ 20/100 improved to ≥ 20/40.

Conclusions:

  • Presenting visual acuity is a significant predictor of visual prognosis in BRAO.
  • Eyes with initial BCVA of 20/40 or better generally maintain good vision.
  • Significant visual improvement is uncommon in eyes with presenting BCVA of 20/100 or worse.
