Background:

  • Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a significant cause of acute viral hepatitis globally.
  • Limited data exists on HEV epidemiology within Iran.
  • This study addresses the knowledge gap by assessing HEV seroprevalence in Isfahan Province.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the seroprevalence of Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection.
  • To investigate the distribution of anti-HEV antibodies in Isfahan Province, Iran.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2005.
  • 816 individuals aged 6+ from urban and rural Isfahan were sampled using multistage cluster sampling.
  • Anti-HEV antibodies were measured via ELISA; statistical analysis used the Chi-square test.

Main Results:

  • The overall anti-HEV seroprevalence was 3.8%.
  • Seroprevalence showed an increasing trend with age, from 0.9% (6-9 years) to 8.1% (>50 years).
  • Significant regional variation was observed, with the highest prevalence in Khomeini Shahr (13.3%).

Conclusions:

  • HEV seroprevalence in Isfahan Province is lower than previously reported in Iran and the Middle East.
  • Further research across Iran is recommended to map prevalence and inform prevention strategies.
