Bacterial Phylum Bacteroidota01:26

Bacterial Phylum Bacteroidota

The phylum Bacteroidota includes over 700 species classified into four primary orders: Bacteroidales, Cytophagales, Flavobacteriales, and Sphingobacteriales. These gram-negative, non-sporulating rods exhibit saccharolytic capabilities and can be aerobic or fermentative, encompassing obligate aerobes, facultative aerobes, and obligate anaerobes. Many species display gliding motility, though some are nonmotile or use flagella. The genus Bacteroides is well-studied due to its significant role in...

Bacterial Phylum Actinobacteria

Coryneform bacteria are gram-positive, aerobic, nonmotile rods that exhibit irregular, club-shaped, or V-shaped arrangements. Their V-shape results from snapping division, where the inner cell wall layer forms the cross-wall, while the outer layer remains intact until it ruptures on one side, causing the daughter cells to bend away. The primary genera are Corynebacterium and Arthrobacter. Corynebacterium includes diverse species, ranging from saprophytes to pathogens like Corynebacterium...
Microorganisms in Agriculture and Food industry01:27

Microorganisms in Agriculture and Food industry

Microorganisms play a crucial role in agriculture and the food industry, contributing to soil fertility, crop protection, and food production. Their functions range from nitrogen fixation and biopesticide production to fermentation and food preservation, making them indispensable to sustainable farming and food safety.Role in AgricultureNitrogen-fixing bacteria, such as Rhizobium (symbiotic) and Azotobacter (free-living), convert atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia through biological nitrogen...
Bacterial Phylum Proteobacteria01:26

Bacterial Phylum Proteobacteria

Proteobacteria, one of the largest and most diverse bacterial phyla, encompasses a wide range of Gram-negative bacteria distinguished by their outer membrane composed of lipopolysaccharides. These microorganisms exhibit various metabolic capabilities, including phototrophy, chemolithotrophy, and heterotrophy, and thrive in diverse environments from soil to aquatic systems and host-associated niches. The phylum is divided into six classes: Alphaproteobacteria, Betaproteobacteria,...
Deep Sea Microbial Ecology01:18

Deep Sea Microbial Ecology

The deep ocean and its underlying sediments represent vast, largely unexplored microbial habitats that extend far beyond the sunlit photic zone. The photic (euphotic) zone typically spans the upper ~100–200 meters of pelagic waters in the open ocean, but its depth varies geographically and seasonally, where sufficient light supports photosynthetic life. Below this lies the deep sea, spanning roughly 1000–6000 meters (bathypelagic to abyssal zones), with deeper hadal trenches extending beyond...
Soil Microbial Ecology01:29

Soil Microbial Ecology

Soil microbial ecology is defined by highly diverse, spatially structured communities that drive nutrient cycling, organic matter turnover, and overall ecosystem stability. Although a gram of soil can contain thousands of bacterial and archaeal taxa, the ecological processes they mediate are even more crucial for sustaining terrestrial life.Microhabitats and NichesSoil is a heterogeneous mixture of minerals, organic matter, water, and air. Microbes inhabit distinct microhabitats formed by...

Summary

A novel Gram-negative bacterium, strain PB92(T), was isolated from Korean soil. Phylogenetic and phenotypic analyses confirm it represents a new species, Pedobacter agri sp. nov., expanding the Pedobacter genus.

Area of Science:

  • Microbiology
  • Bacteriology
  • Taxonomy

Background:

  • The family Sphingobacteriaceae includes various bacteria with diverse ecological roles.
  • Accurate bacterial classification is crucial for understanding microbial communities and their functions.
  • The genus Pedobacter comprises several species known for their distinct characteristics.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To isolate and characterize a novel bacterial strain from soil.
  • To determine the taxonomic position of the isolated strain within the genus Pedobacter.
  • To propose a new species designation based on comprehensive analysis.

Main Methods:

  • Isolation of Gram-negative bacteria from soil samples.
  • Phylogenetic analysis using 16S rRNA gene sequencing.
  • Analysis of cellular fatty acid composition and DNA G+C content.
  • Physiological and biochemical characterization.

Main Results:

  • Strain PB92(T) was identified as a Gram-negative bacterium belonging to the Sphingobacteriaceae family.
  • Phylogenetic analysis showed close but distinct relationship to known Pedobacter species.
  • Major fatty acids included iso-C15:0 and C16:1ω7c; DNA G+C content was 41.4 mol%.
  • Distinct genotypic and phenotypic features differentiated PB92(T) from related species.

Conclusions:

  • Strain PB92(T) represents a novel species within the genus Pedobacter.
  • The proposed new species is named Pedobacter agri sp. nov.
  • This discovery contributes to the diversity knowledge of the Pedobacter genus.
