Nursing Process for Patient and Caregiver Teaching III: Evaluation and Documentation01:20

Nursing Process for Patient and Caregiver Teaching III: Evaluation and Documentation

Evaluation of the teaching process enables the nurse to determine if the patient's learning needs were met and if training was effective. If the expected outcomes are not met, the care plan is revised, and additional education or reinforcement is provided. Nurses can ask questions after the session or obtain feedback to assess the patient's understanding of the topic.
Nurses can use several methods to evaluate patient outcomes. For example, oral questions can assess cognitive learning, patient...
Nursing Evaluation01:15

Nursing Evaluation

The evaluation stage signals the end of the nursing process. The nurse gathers evaluative data to assess whether or not the patient has attained the expected results. Whereas the nurse collects data in the nursing assessment to identify the patient's health concerns, the evaluation stage data determines if the indicated health issues are resolved. Evaluative data collection includes two sections: the data acquired to evaluate patient outcomes and the time criteria for data collection.
Section...

Summary

The Physical Activity Across the Curriculum (PAAC) intervention successfully increased elementary students' physical activity levels. This classroom-based program showed promising results in its first year, with teachers incorporating active lessons effectively.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Health
  • Educational Interventions
  • Public Health

Background:

  • The Physical Activity Across the Curriculum (PAAC) is a 3-year elementary school intervention.
  • It aims to reduce body mass index (BMI) gains by increasing moderate-intensity physical activity in classrooms.
  • This is a cluster-randomized controlled trial involving 4905 children.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the process of implementing the PAAC intervention in elementary schools.
  • To identify successes and challenges in integrating physical activity into academic lessons.
  • To assess the impact on student physical activity levels and potential competing factors.

Main Methods:

  • A mixed-methods approach using qualitative and quantitative data from 24 schools.
  • Process evaluation focused on teacher training, implementation barriers, and program activity use.
  • Data collected from 14 intervention and 10 control schools.

Main Results:

  • High teacher attendance at training sessions indicated successful program reach.
  • Intervention students showed significantly higher physical activity levels than controls (p < 0.0001).
  • Students reported higher enjoyment of classroom-based active lessons, with minimal competing factors identified.

Conclusions:

  • The first year of the PAAC intervention demonstrated successes and challenges in modifying academic lessons for physical activity.
  • Process evaluation was crucial for understanding implementation dynamics.
  • The intervention effectively increased student physical activity levels.
