Summary

Physician assistant students effectively learned to use medical interpreters after a cultural competency and Medical Spanish curriculum. This training is feasible and cost-effective for health professions programs.

Background:

Effective patient-provider communication is vital for positive health outcomes.
Working with interpreters is essential for patients with limited English proficiency.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess physician assistant students' ability to effectively use interpreters with Spanish-speaking patients.
To evaluate the impact of a cultural competency and Medical Spanish curriculum on interpreter use.

Main Methods:

A training module on working with interpreters was implemented.
Students received orientation, practice, and role-playing.
Performance was evaluated through standardized patient assessments by clinicians and bilingual evaluators.

Main Results:

High competence rates were observed: 94% in 2007 and 96% in 2008.
Students demonstrated effective use of interpreters in patient assessments.

Conclusions:

Training students to work with interpreters is feasible and beneficial.
The curriculum enhancement received positive feedback and was reasonably priced.
This training can be integrated into various medical and allied health programs.
