Purpose of the Study:

  • To establish a safe and reliable method for assessing Kupffer cell function.
  • To evaluate Kupffer cell function in patients with obstructive jaundice using MRI.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) after injecting superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO).
  • SPIO is phagocytosed by Kupffer cells, allowing function assessment.
  • Analyzed T1-weighted signal intensity changes in liver parenchyma over 60 minutes in 14 patients (6 controls, 8 with obstructive jaundice).

Main Results:

  • Liver signal intensity decreased post-SPIO injection in all patients.
  • Serum iron levels increased similarly in both groups.
  • Obstructive jaundice patients showed significantly higher relative enhancement values between 8-20 minutes, indicating Kupffer cell dysfunction.

Conclusions:

  • Chronological MRI with SPIO is a viable method for assessing Kupffer cell function.
  • This technique can identify Kupffer cell dysfunction in obstructive jaundice.
