Batch vs Continuous Culture01:14

Batch vs Continuous Culture

Fermentation is a foundational biotechnological process used to produce pharmaceuticals, biofuels, enzymes, and food additives. Among industrial strategies, batch and continuous fermentation are the two most widely applied. Although both rely on microbial conversion of substrates into desired products, they differ markedly in operation, productivity, and suitability for specific applications.Batch fermentation occurs in a closed system in which nutrient media and inoculum are added at the...

Drug Accumulation During Multiple Dosing: Intermittent IV Infusions

Intermittent intravenous (IV) infusion is a method of drug administration where medications are delivered over short infusion periods followed by intervals of no drug delivery. This approach helps to prevent sustained high drug concentrations in the bloodstream, reducing the risk of adverse effects associated with prolonged exposure. Unlike continuous infusion, steady-state concentrations may not be achieved during a single dosing cycle but can be reached through repeated...
Nature and Nurture01:10

Nature and Nurture

Many human characteristics, like height, are shaped by both nature—in other words, by our genes—and by nurture, or our environment. For example, chronic stress during childhood inhibits the production of growth hormones and consequently reduces bone growth and height. Scientists estimate that 70-90% of variation in height is due to genetic differences among individuals, and 10-30% of variation in height is due to differences in the environments that individuals experience, such as differences...

Summary

Both interrupted and uninterrupted resistance training equally enhance bone modeling and bone mineral density (BMD) in young animals. This study found no significant difference between continuous repetitions versus multiple daily sessions for improving bone health markers.

Area of Science:

  • Exercise Physiology
  • Bone Biology
  • Animal Models

Background:

  • Resistance training is crucial for bone health.
  • Understanding optimal training protocols for bone modeling is important.
  • Previous research has not directly compared interrupted versus uninterrupted resistance training for bone outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the effects of uninterrupted (UT) versus interrupted (IT) resistance training on bone modeling and bone mineral density (BMD).
  • To determine if training session structure influences bone adaptation in maturating animals.

Main Methods:

  • 24 young male rats were divided into Control, UT, and IT groups.
  • UT and IT groups performed ladder climbing with weights 3 days/wk for 6 weeks.
  • Bone modeling markers (serum osteocalcin, urinary deoxypyridinoline [DPD]) and tibial BMD were assessed.

Main Results:

  • Both UT and IT resistance training significantly reduced urinary DPD compared to controls.
  • Tibial BMD was significantly higher in both UT and IT groups versus controls.
  • No significant differences in DPD or BMD were observed between the UT and IT groups.

Conclusions:

  • Both interrupted and uninterrupted resistance training programs are equally effective in stimulating bone modeling.
  • The structure of resistance training sessions (continuous vs. interrupted) does not appear to impact bone adaptation when total work volume is equivalent.
