Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Integrative Medicine
  • Clinical Research

Background:

  • Primary headache disorders represent a significant global health burden.
  • Current management often involves pharmacotherapy, with varying efficacy and potential side effects.
  • There is a need for effective, non-pharmacological treatment options for headache management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture as an adjunctive therapy for primary headache.
  • To compare acupuncture plus routine care against routine care alone.
  • To assess whether the effects of acupuncture differ between randomized and non-randomized patient groups.

Main Methods:

  • A combined randomized controlled trial and non-randomized cohort study design.
  • Patients received up to 15 acupuncture sessions over 3 months or were assigned to a control group.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Data on headache frequency, pain intensity, and quality of life (SF-36) were collected at baseline, 3, and 6 months.
  • Main Results:

    • Acupuncture significantly reduced headache days (P < 0.001) and pain intensity compared to the control group.
    • Health-related quality of life (SF-36) showed greater improvement in the acupuncture group (P < 0.001).
    • Outcomes in non-randomized patients receiving acupuncture were comparable to those in randomized patients, with sustained benefits at 6 months.

    Conclusions:

    • Acupuncture, when integrated with routine care, offers substantial clinical benefits for patients with primary headache.
    • The positive effects of acupuncture on headache frequency, intensity, and quality of life are significant and durable.
    • Acupuncture serves as a viable and effective complementary treatment for primary headaches, irrespective of patient randomization status.
