Summary

Soft drusen are common in polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) in Japanese patients, affecting one-third of eyes. Their presence appears to have minimal impact on the clinical course of PCV.

Background:

  • Polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) is a subtype of neovascular age-related macular degeneration.
  • Drusen are yellowish deposits under the retina, commonly associated with macular degeneration.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence and clinical characteristics of drusen in eyes diagnosed with PCV.
  • To determine the association between drusen and PCV in a Japanese patient cohort.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 98 consecutive patients (102 eyes) with PCV.
  • Definition of drusen: presence of intermediate or large soft drusen (>or=63 microm) within 1500 microm of the foveal center.
  • Eyes with PCV and drusen were compared to eyes with PCV but no drusen.

Main Results:

  • Soft drusen were observed in the inner macula of 23% of eyes with PCV.
  • Overall, 33% of eyes with PCV had soft drusen in at least one eye.
  • No significant differences in patient characteristics or ocular manifestations were found between PCV eyes with and without drusen.

Conclusions:

  • Drusen are a frequent finding in eyes with PCV, particularly in Japanese populations.
  • The presence of drusen in PCV eyes appears to have a minor or negligible effect on the clinical progression of the disease.
