Splenic vein aneurysm: MR appearance--a case report.

Summary

A presumed pancreatic head mass was misdiagnosed by initial CT scan. Advanced imaging confirmed it was a splenic vein aneurysm, avoiding a dangerous biopsy.

Background:

Non-contrast computed tomography (CT) is a common initial imaging modality for abdominal pathologies.
Differentiating pancreatic head masses from other vascular anomalies can be challenging.
Splenic vein aneurysms are rare vascular malformations requiring accurate diagnosis.

Observation:

A case presented with a lesion in the pancreatic head region on non-contrast CT.
The initial CT suggested a malignant pancreatic mass.
Further diagnostic workup was initiated due to the equivocal findings.

Findings:

Enhanced CT, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), sonography, and arteriography were performed for detailed evaluation.
These advanced imaging techniques definitively identified the lesion as a splenic vein aneurysm.
The findings excluded a pancreatic head mass and malignancy.

Implications:

Accurate diagnosis of splenic vein aneurysms is crucial for appropriate management.
Advanced imaging modalities are essential for characterizing vascular lesions.
Avoiding unnecessary invasive procedures like percutaneous aspiration enhances patient safety.
