Summary

Cognitive impairment is common in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Recently diagnosed SLE patients showed significant deficits in cognitive efficiency and sustained attention compared to healthy individuals.

  • Linear regression analysis compared ANAM throughput scores between groups, adjusting for demographic factors.
  • Main Results:

    • SLE patients scored significantly lower than controls on 4 of 9 ANAM subtests.
    • Impairments were noted in immediate recall, continuous performance, matching to sample, and the Sternberg subtest.
    • Deficits were particularly pronounced in cognitive efficiency, sustained attention, visuospatial working memory, and reaction time.

    Conclusions:

    • Recently diagnosed SLE patients exhibit significant cognitive deficits compared to controls.
    • These impairments in cognitive efficiency and sustained attention are present early in SLE, even without overt neuropsychiatric symptoms.
    • The findings highlight the need for early cognitive screening in SLE patients.
