    Summary

    Abnormal liver function tests can stem from various liver conditions or systemic diseases. Identifying the root cause is crucial for effective treatment, prioritizing systemic disease management or intensive liver support when necessary.

    Background:

    • Abnormal liver function tests (LFTs) present a diagnostic challenge with numerous potential etiologies.
    • Common causes include viral hepatitis, alcohol-related liver disease, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), autoimmune conditions, hereditary disorders, malignancies, infections, gallstones, and drug-induced liver injury (DILI).
    • The liver's involvement in systemic diseases, affecting other primary organs, adds complexity to diagnosing abnormal LFTs.

    Discussion:

    • In patients lacking a clear liver-specific etiology after initial screening (serology, imaging), systemic diseases become significant considerations for abnormal LFTs.
