Psoriasis is linked to a higher prevalence of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). This study highlights the importance of managing smoking and other risk factors in psoriasis patients to mitigate COPD risk.

Background:

Psoriasis and metabolic syndrome share associations.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is also linked to metabolic syndrome.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the association between psoriasis and COPD.
Utilizing a population-based case-control design.

Main Methods:

Compared 12,502 psoriasis cases with 24,287 controls.
Utilized Clalit Health Services database in Israel.
Adjusted for age, sex, socioeconomic status, smoking, and obesity via logistic regression.

Main Results:

COPD prevalence was significantly higher in psoriasis patients (5.7% vs. 3.6%).
Psoriasis showed a significant association with COPD (OR 1.63).
Multivariate analysis confirmed psoriasis association with COPD (adjusted OR 1.27).

Conclusions:

Psoriasis is significantly associated with COPD in a large population.
Dermatologists should consider COPD risk in psoriasis patients.
Advise smoking cessation and risk factor reduction for COPD prevention.
