  • To evaluate the effectiveness of sputum examinations and chest radiographs (CXRs) in detecting pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) in patients with XPTB.
  • To determine the utility of these diagnostic tools in identifying potentially infectious XPTB cases.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of 72 XPTB patients managed through a TB Program.
  • Analysis of chest radiograph (CXR) findings and sputum examination results (smears and cultures).

Main Results:

  • Lymph nodes and pleura were the most common XPTB sites.
  • 49% of XPTB patients had abnormal CXR findings.
  • Sputum cultures were positive in 21% of patients with collected sputum; 9% had positive smears.

  • Sputum examinations are valuable for detecting potentially infectious XPTB cases, irrespective of CXR results.
  • Weight loss is a clinical indicator associated with positive sputum cultures in XPTB patients.
