Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of vitamin B in treating generalized peripheral neuropathy.

Main Methods:

  • Conducted a systematic review of randomized and quasi-randomized trials.
  • Searched major databases including Cochrane, MEDLINE, and EMBASE up to September 2005.
  • Included 13 studies with 741 participants suffering from alcoholic or diabetic neuropathy.

Main Results:

  • Two small trials showed no significant short-term pain relief with vitamin B compared to placebo.
  • One trial indicated a minor benefit in vibration detection with oral benfotiamine.
  • Higher doses of vitamin B complex showed some short-term improvements in pain and paresthesia.

Conclusions:

  • Limited randomized trial data exists for vitamin B in peripheral neuropathy.
