Summary

Microetching mandibular teeth before acid-etching did not significantly reduce orthodontic bracket failures in the initial six months. This study found no statistically significant difference in bracket retention between the two surface preparation methods.

  • One percent of brackets failed on the microetched side (2 brackets).
  • 2.1% of brackets failed on the conventionally acid-etched side (4 brackets).
  • The difference in failure rates was not statistically significant (p = 0.41).

Conclusions:

  • Conventional acid-etching provides comparable bracket retention to microetching followed by acid-etching.
