    Summary

    Postanesthesia shaking (PS) is not caused by hypothermia, as patient temperature differences were not significant between those who developed PS and those who did not. This study challenges traditional beliefs about the etiology of postanesthesia shaking.

    Background:

    • Postanesthesia shaking (PS) is a common postoperative complication with an unknown etiology.
    • Traditional nursing belief attributes PS to hypothermia.
    • Two theories exist: classic thermoregulation and spinal reflex hyperactivity.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare postoperative temperature and temperature changes between patients with and without PS.
    • To examine gender differences in postoperative temperature.

    Main Methods:

    • A comparative study of 533 patients undergoing general anesthesia.
    • Measurement of postoperative axillary temperature on PACU admission.
    • Statistical analysis (t-tests) to compare temperature variables between groups.

    • The etiology of postanesthesia shaking likely involves factors beyond simple hypothermia.
