Background:

  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological disease.
  • Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is a neurological disorder characterized by an urge to move the legs.
  • A potential link between MS and secondary RLS requires investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if a symptomatic form of RLS exists secondary to MS.
  • To identify risk factors associated with RLS in MS patients.
  • To assess the impact of RLS on sleep quality in MS.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective, multicenter, case-control epidemiologic survey was conducted.
  • Data were collected from 861 MS patients and 649 control subjects across 20 sleep centers.
  • Information gathered included demographics, clinical factors, RLS presence/severity, and MRI findings.

Main Results:

  • RLS prevalence was 19% in MS patients versus 4.2% in controls, a 5.4-fold increased risk.
  • Significant risk factors for RLS in MS included older age, longer MS duration, progressive MS form, and greater disability.
  • MS patients with RLS reported more sleep complaints and higher hypnotic medication use.

Conclusions:

  • RLS is significantly associated with Multiple Sclerosis, particularly in patients with severe neurological disability.
  • Inflammatory processes in MS may contribute to the development of secondary RLS.
  • Screening for RLS is recommended in MS patients with insomnia unresponsive to standard treatments.
