Summary

Giant cell arteritis is a systemic vasculitis affecting large vessels. Early steroid treatment is crucial to prevent vision loss from arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy.

Genome-wide Association Studies-GWAS

Genome-wide association studies or GWAS are used to identify whether common SNPs are associated with certain diseases. Suppose specific SNPs are more frequently observed in individuals with a particular disease than those without the disease. In that case, those SNPs are said to be associated with the disease. Chi-square analysis is performed to check the probability of the allele likely to be associated with the disease.
GWAS does not require the identification of the target gene involved in...

Area of Science:

  • Rheumatology
  • Ophthalmology

Background:

  • Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is a systemic vasculitis of unknown etiology affecting large and medium-sized arteries.
  • Clinical symptoms include headache, jaw claudication, and systemic signs like fatigue and weight loss.

Observation:

  • Ocular involvement occurs in up to 70% of GCA patients.
  • Arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AAION) is a common and severe ophthalmic complication.
  • This case highlights AAION as the primary visual manifestation in a 68-year-old female GCA patient.

Findings:

  • Giant cell arteritis can present with severe visual impairment due to AAION.
  • Prompt diagnosis and treatment are essential for visual preservation.

Implications:

  • Emphasizes the critical need for early recognition and aggressive steroid therapy in GCA to prevent irreversible vision loss.
  • Highlights the importance of ophthalmologic evaluation in suspected GCA cases.
