Area of Science:

  • Cardiovascular Pharmacology
  • Oral Medicine

Background:

  • Calcium antagonists (AC) are widely used in cardiovascular therapy.
  • Nifedipine (NI) is a common AC with known side effects.
  • Gingival overgrowth is a documented adverse effect of nifedipine.

Observation:

  • Four patient cases exhibiting nifedipine-induced gingival overgrowth were analyzed.
  • The study focused on the clinical presentation and management of this side effect.

Findings:

  • Gingival overgrowth associated with nifedipine use was observed.
  • In one case, the condition resolved after nifedipine withdrawal.
  • Improved oral hygiene habits contributed to the resolution of gingival overgrowth.

Implications:

  • Discontinuation of nifedipine and enhanced oral hygiene can effectively manage drug-induced gingival overgrowth.
  • This highlights the importance of monitoring for and addressing nifedipine side effects.
  • Further research into the mechanisms and prevention of nifedipine-induced gingival overgrowth is warranted.
