Aortic dissection: a challenging ED diagnosis

Aortic dissection is one of the most difficult diagnoses to make. While the symptoms are not always "classic" and often can mimic other conditions, observers agree there are guidelines that will ensure the use of best practices: Be sure your staff are trained to consider the possibility of aortic dissection when a patient presents with chest pain. Treat any chest pain condition as one that must be diagnosed properly in a matter of"seconds to minutes." Know the classic symptoms of aortic dissection, i.e., a tearing sensation in the chest, back, or both.
