Imaging Studies for Cardiovascular System III: X-Ray01:20

Imaging Studies for Cardiovascular System III: X-Ray

The most common cardiovascular diagnostic test is an X-ray. It produces images of the heart, blood vessels, and adjacent structures.
Definition and Purpose
An X-ray, or radiograph, is a non-invasive method that uses ionizing radiation to take images of internal structures. It is mainly used in cardiac imaging to examine the heart, lungs, and major blood vessels, aiming to identify abnormalities in the heart's size, shape, and position, such as heart failure, congenital defects, and vascular...
Atherosclerosis I: Introduction01:30

Atherosclerosis I: Introduction

Atherosclerosis is a progressive disorder characterized by the buildup of plaques on the arterial inner wall, causing them to narrow and harden over time. These plaques comprise lipids, calcium, blood components, carbohydrates, and fibrous tissue. The process primarily affects the intima of large and medium-sized arteries, reducing blood flow in any artery.Etiology and risk factorsThe cause of atherosclerosis is multifactorial, involving a complex interplay among endothelial injury, lipid...

Imaging Studies for Cardiovascular System VI: Calcium -Scoring CT

Calcium-Scoring CT ScanA calcium-scoring CT scan, also known as coronary artery calcium (CAC) scan, detects calcium deposits in the coronary arteries. This test assesses the risk of coronary artery disease (CAD), which can lead to cardiovascular events such as angina, heart failure, and sudden cardiac arrest.A calcium-scoring CT scan is generally recommended for individuals at intermediate risk of CAD without symptoms. It includes:Men aged 40-75 and women aged 50-75: Especially those with a...
Elastin is Responsible for Tissue Elasticity01:12

Elastin is Responsible for Tissue Elasticity

Elastic fiber contains the protein elastin along with lesser amounts of other proteins and glycoproteins. The main property of elastin is that it will return to its original shape after being stretched or compressed. Elastic fibers are prominent in elastic tissues found in skin and the elastic ligaments of the vertebral column.
Ligaments and tendons are made of dense regular connective tissue, but in ligaments not all fibers are parallel. Dense regular elastic tissue contains elastin fibers and...

Summary

This case report highlights placental calcification in Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE). Most pregnancies in women with PXE are uncomplicated, with no increased fetal loss.

Area of Science:

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Genetics
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) is an inherited disorder affecting elastic tissue.
  • PXE is primarily caused by mutations in the ABCC6 gene.
  • Pregnancy complications in PXE can include cardiovascular and gastrointestinal issues.

Observation:

  • A 37-year-old woman with PXE presented with a markedly echogenic placenta on antenatal imaging.
  • Extensive placental calcification was confirmed via postpartum histology.
  • The patient had no antenatal complications.

Findings:

  • A healthy infant was delivered via Cesarean section and remained well at 6 months.
  • No significant maternal or fetal complications occurred during the antenatal period.

  • PXE was not associated with increased fetal loss or adverse reproductive outcomes in this case.
  • Implications:

    • Pregnancy in women with PXE can be uncomplicated despite potential vascular damage.
    • Obstetric prognosis depends on the severity of vascular involvement.
    • Women with PXE can be reassured about reproductive outcomes and advised against avoiding pregnancy.
