Summary

Phacoemulsification with the phaco chop technique is safe for vitrectomized eyes, showing minimal intraoperative issues and improved vision. Early postoperative complications were rare and manageable.

  • Most cataracts were nuclear sclerosis or posterior subcapsular (72%).
  • Intraoperative miosis (28%) and posterior capsule plaques (20%) were noted; no posterior capsule rupture, zonular lysis, or dropped nuclei occurred.
  • One case of serous choroidal detachment resolved conservatively. Visual acuity improved significantly (LogMar 0.74 to 0.36, p < 0.001).

Conclusions:

  • Phacoemulsification with the phaco chop technique is a safe and effective procedure for eyes previously treated with vitrectomy.
  • The technique demonstrates a low complication rate in this specific patient population.
