Three new flavonoids from Pterocaulon alopecurioides show antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria. These compounds, isolated and structurally identified, offer potential for developing new antimicrobial agents.
Area of Science:
- Phytochemistry
- Natural Products Chemistry
- Microbiology
Background:
- Pterocaulon alopecurioides is a plant species known for its potential medicinal properties.
- Flavonoids are a diverse class of plant secondary metabolites with a wide range of biological activities.
- Antibacterial resistance necessitates the discovery of novel antimicrobial compounds.
Purpose of the Study:
- To isolate and characterize novel and known flavonoids from the aerial parts of Pterocaulon alopecurioides.
- To evaluate the antibacterial activity of the isolated flavonoids against a panel of pathogenic bacteria.
- To determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of active compounds.
Main Methods:
- Isolation of compounds using chromatographic techniques.
- Structure elucidation of novel flavonoids using mass spectrometry (MS) and 1D/2D Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy.
- Antibacterial screening using disc diffusion assays and microdilution methods.
Main Results:
- Three new flavonoids (compounds 1-3) and three known flavonoids (compounds 4-6) were isolated and identified.
- Compounds 2, 3, 4, and 6 exhibited antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis).
- MIC values for active compounds were determined to be less than or equal to 200 µg/mL.
Conclusions:
- Pterocaulon alopecurioides is a source of bioactive flavonoids with antibacterial properties.
- The isolated flavonoids, particularly compounds 2, 3, 4, and 6, demonstrate potential as leads for developing new antibacterial agents.
- Further research is warranted to explore the mechanism of action and therapeutic potential of these compounds.
