Drugs for Treatment of Diarrhea-Predominant IBS

Diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D) is a subtype of IBS characterized primarily by frequent, loose, or watery stools, abdominal pain, and abdominal discomfort. Therapeutic approaches to managing IBS-D include dietary changes, stress management techniques, and pharmaceutical interventions.
Two specific drugs used in the treatment are alosetron (Lotronex) and eluxadoline (Viberzi). Alosetron, a 5-HT3 antagonist, works by slowing the movement of stools in the gut, reducing bowel...

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Eating Disorders
  • Health Economics

Background:

  • Bulimia nervosa (BN) is an eating disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of binge eating and compensatory behaviors.
  • The direct financial costs associated with food and other consumption behaviors in BN have not been previously quantified.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate and estimate the direct monetary costs of food and associated symptoms for individuals diagnosed with bulimia nervosa.
  • To determine the proportion of food expenditure attributed to binge eating and purging behaviors.

Main Methods:

  • Ten participants with a clinical diagnosis of bulimia nervosa (BN) participated in the study.
  • A 7-day food record was completed by each participant at the beginning of treatment to estimate weekly and yearly monetary food costs.

Main Results:

  • Participants reported an average of 3.6 purging episodes, 2.5 objective binge episodes, and 2.4 subjective binge eating episodes per week.
  • The average total annual food cost was $5,581.79.
  • Costs directly related to binge eating and purging behaviors represented 32.7% of total food costs, averaging $1,599.45 annually.

Conclusions:

  • The financial costs associated with bulimia nervosa symptoms are substantial.
  • These symptom-related costs represent a significant portion of the overall food expenditure for individuals with BN.
