Background:

  • Basilar artery occlusion (BAO) is a rare but devastating stroke subtype.
  • High case fatality rates and poor outcomes are characteristic of BAO.
  • Existing data on BAO outcomes are limited to small, selected patient series.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To establish a prospective registry (BASICS) for collecting data on basilar artery occlusion.
  • To gather preliminary data to guide the design of future clinical treatment trials for BAO.
  • To enroll a target of 500 patients in the international registry.

Main Methods:

  • The BASICS registry is a prospective, observational, multi-center, international study.
  • Consecutive patients with symptomatic and radiologically confirmed basilar artery occlusion were enrolled.
  • Data collection occurred from November 2002 to December 2006.

  • Intra-arterial (IA) therapy was the most common treatment (55%), followed by antithrombotics (29%) and IV thrombolysis (6%).
