Background:

Corneal flaps are typically associated with refractive surgery.
Airbag deployment in motor vehicle accidents can cause significant facial and ocular trauma.

Observation:

A 27-year-old woman sustained a 6mm corneal flap and traumatic optic neuropathy after airbag deployment during a road traffic accident.
The patient had no prior ocular history.

Findings:

The corneal flap extended to the anterior stroma depth.
Complete reattachment of the corneal flap was observed after one month.

Implications:

This case highlights a novel mechanism of corneal injury from airbag deployment.
Ophthalmologists should consider airbag-induced corneal flaps in patients presenting with trauma after motor vehicle accidents.
