  • Muscle carnosine and anserine concentrations, SR Ca2+-ATPase activity, and Ca2+ uptake/release rates were measured.
  • Main Results:

    • Dietary CBEX significantly increased muscle carnosine (approx. 15%) and anserine (approx. 45%) concentrations.
    • High-intensity exercise depressed SR Ca2+-handling ability in both groups.
    • CBEX-fed rats exhibited a lesser degree of SR Ca2+ handling reduction compared to control rats.

    Conclusions:

    • Dietary CBEX supplementation increases muscle histidine-containing dipeptide concentrations.
    • CBEX may attenuate exercise-induced deteriorations in sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-handling ability.
    • This suggests a potential ergogenic effect of CBEX for high-intensity exercise performance.
