Summary

Tuberculosis (TB) has a long history, with organized control efforts beginning in the 1930s. The Revised National TB Control Programme (RNTCP) uses the DOTS strategy to combat this global emergency.

Background:

Tuberculosis (TB) is an ancient disease, with evidence found in prehistoric human remains and documented by Hippocrates.
Historical TB treatments were rudimentary and ineffective by modern standards.

Observation:

Organized global efforts to control TB emerged in the late 1930s, starting with sanatoria and clinics.
The National TB Control Programme spanned decades, leading to the World Health Organization declaring TB a global emergency.
The Revised National TB Control Programme (RNTCP) implements the WHO-recommended Directly Observed Treatment Short-course (DOTS) strategy.

Findings:

The RNTCP's performance, utilizing the DOTS strategy, is considered more than satisfactory.
Full implementation of the DOTS strategy is crucial for effective TB control.
