Summary

A linear hyperechoic structure in the fetal cisterna magna, often mistaken for the straight sinus, is actually normal subarachnoid septa. This common finding is visible on obstetric ultrasound from 15 to 38 weeks.

Background:

  • A linear hyperechoic structure in the cisterna magna is occasionally observed during obstetric ultrasound.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence and sonographic appearance of a linear hyperechoic structure in the fetal cisterna magna.
  • To correlate ultrasound findings with gross and microscopic anatomy to clarify its identity.

Main Methods:

  • One hundred three fetal ultrasound examinations were performed between 15 and 38 menstrual weeks.
  • Ultrasound water-bath examination of 18 fixed postmortem specimens and fetuses.
  • Correlation with gross and microscopic examination of fetal brain specimens.
