Initiation of Translation02:33

Initiation of Translation

38.9K
Initiating translation is complex because it involves multiple molecules. Initiator tRNA, ribosomal subunits, and eukaryotic initiation factors (eIFs) are all required to assemble on the initiation codon of mRNA. This process consists of several steps that are mediated by different eIFs.
First, the initiator tRNA must be selected from the pool of elongator tRNAs by eukaryotic initiation factor 2 (eIF2). The initiator tRNA (Met-tRNAi) has conserved sequence elements including modified bases at...

Self-Concept01:19

Self-Concept

1.6K
Self-concept is the cognitive and emotional understanding individuals hold about their identity. It evolves through various developmental stages, beginning in infancy and maturing as children grow. This concept influences how individuals perceive their abilities, interact with others, and manage challenges throughout life.
Infancy and Emerging Recognition
During infancy, self-concept is virtually nonexistent. Babies do not distinguish themselves as separate entities and often mistake their...

Compounds Essential to Human Function01:25

Compounds Essential to Human Function

10.1K
The human body is composed of cells that are fundamentally made up of several different molecules. These molecules are essential to carry out all physiological processes in the body and are broadly classified into organic and inorganic based on their chemical structures.
Inorganic Compounds Essential to Human Functioning
Inorganic compounds essential to human functioning include water, salts, acids, and bases. These compounds are inorganic, i.e., they do not have a carbon-hydrogen bond. Water...

Essential Minerals for Bone Health01:31

Essential Minerals for Bone Health

6.3K
The minerals contained in all of the food we consume are essential for our organ systems. However, certain essential minerals, such as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, manganese, and fluoride, largely affect bone health.
Calcium and Phosphorus
Calcium is a critical component of bones, especially in the form of calcium phosphate and calcium carbonate. Since the body cannot make calcium, it must be obtained from the diet. However, calcium cannot be absorbed from the small intestine without...

Concepts and Prototypes01:24

Concepts and Prototypes

536
The human nervous system handles vast amounts of information by translating sensory stimuli into neural impulses, which the brain processes, creating thoughts expressed through language or stored as memories. The brain also synthesizes information from emotions and memories, which significantly influence thoughts and behaviors. This intricate process creates a comprehensive mental picture.
The brain organizes this information using concepts, which are mental categories grouping linguistic data,...

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Pulmonology
  • Competency-Based Assessment

Background:

  • Competency-based training is replacing traditional medical education models.
  • The Essential Bronchoscopist (EB) is a multilingual, web-based curriculum for bronchoscopic knowledge.
  • It utilizes question-answer sets for a laddered learning approach.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate if Essential Bronchoscopist (EB) question-answer sets can form the basis for competency-based bronchoscopic knowledge tests.
  • To assess the suitability of EB material for use in diverse international healthcare environments.

Main Methods:

  • 186 question-answer sets from the Essential Bronchoscopist (EB) were reviewed by 30 bronchoscopists (10 junior, 5 senior) from Argentina and the USA.
  • Participants rated each item's necessity for a competency-based test as 'not necessary', 'necessary', or 'absolutely necessary'.
  • Inter-rater agreement was analyzed using the kappa statistic.

Main Results:

  • Over 80% of participants found 150 of 186 items necessary or absolutely necessary.
  • Seventy items were deemed absolutely necessary by over 50% and necessary or absolutely necessary by over 90%.
  • No significant differences in item selection were observed based on training level or practice environment.

Conclusions:

  • Consensus among international junior and senior bronchoscopists supports the use of Essential Bronchoscopist (EB) material for competency-based testing.
  • The EB curriculum's question-answer sets are suitable for developing standardized bronchoscopic knowledge assessments across different healthcare systems.
